About Me
Yoga is all about going at your own pace, knowing your own limits, and
no matter what posture you do, don't get to the point of being in pain.
One great thing about Yoga is it's not a competition. We get to direct
our attention on ourselves and turn that attention inward in a safe
and healthy way. Our bodies remember so much more when we're nice to
them. That's what I learned when I joined Sugi
Studios. I started Sugi teacher training in March 2005 and graduated
in February 2006. There, I was taught all about being good to myself
when doing Yoga. I learned about creating new habits that replaced the
old ones and how easy it can be.
One
of the reasons I practice Sugi Yoga is because for me, it parallels
the principles of 12 step programs (A.A., N.A. & Al-Anon), which
I've been involved with for over 20 years. Drugs numb our pain so we
don't have to feel. Yoga is one of the tools that can help you work
through the pain in a safe and healthy way. Drug addiction is also a
family illness. Yoga can be a family solution.
The kind of yoga I teach allows students to focus on their body, be
able to slow down the chatter in their mind and come to realize that
it's ok to feel. It's amazing what just a little focus on your breathing
can do to help you manage a stressful situation. My yoga classes are
easy, simple, and powerful.
YOGA FOR EVERYONE
-
When I teach a Yoga class, I begin with Relaxation.
Students are shown how to "let go” of stress and tension
by being able to focus on the physical part of their body and how they
breathe while laying on their back. This leads to an emotional, mental,
and spiritual quietness. This is carried with you throughout the class.
Then, we go to Warm-Ups. Our bodies can do different
postures much easier when we're warmed-up. Next is Asanas
(Postures). There are different variations which can be encouraging
for the beginner or challenging for the advanc
ed
student. Many benefits can be gained from regular yoga
practice. So, be sure to keep coming back and also develop your own
practice at home.
After asanas, we move on to Breathing. Breathing is
the bridge between the mind and the body. Students learn how to perform
simple breathing techniques that can help lower blood pressure, calm
a racing heart, or help the digestive system. Our breath is precious.
We can go days without food and/or water but not without breathing.
The next thing we do is Meditation. Many newcomers
to meditation think that they have to be able to stop all thought. In
Sugi Yoga, the student is taught how to withdraw attention from the
endless chains of thoughts that stream through the mind, putting attention
instead on the object of meditation. Meditation has been shown to have
many medical and psychological benefits, including promoting a sense
of well-being, boosting the immune system, and slowing aging.
The last thing we do is take all this with us one day at a time.
It doesn't matter if you're young or old, overweight, underweight, just-the-right-weight,
tall or short. Yoga is for everyone. Come and try it.
One last important detail. My favorite 5 year old picked the name
Jooty Booty Yoga. I think it's the best name ever.
